SUMMER CAMP! 2e-friendly Camp Summit for Gifted returns to California and Maryland in 2020, according to the Summit Center. The camp is a multi-night sleepover summer camp for gifted students ages 9 through 14.  A San Francisco Bay area camp is scheduled for June 14-20; a northern Maryland camp is scheduled for August 9-13. IEP RESOURCE. Learning Success Systems offers a video titled “Individualized Education Plans: A Parent’s Guide.” The producers say of the program, “We think that if parents are educated through this documentary it will save everyone a lot of time and a great deal of frustration while at the same time making it far more likely that the child gets what they need for a successful education.” Find the documentary at the Learning Success Systems website or on Amazon Prime.

EDUCATION POLICY, PRACTICE, LAW, FUNDING, ETC.
— The U.S. education budget. CEC’s Policy Insider newsletter notes, “Congress Dismisses Trump Administration’s Fiscal Year 2021 Budget Proposal.” This means funding levels for education will not be cut, as the president proposed. Read more.
— Adequacy and fairness of state school finance systems. That’s the topic of a report from the Albert Shanker Institute and Rutgers University. From the report’s executive summary: “In this report, we present key findings from the second release of our School Finance Indicators Database (SFID), a public database of sophisticated but user-friendly state school finance measures going back to 1993. This latest version of the SFID includes
data up to 2017 (the 2016-17 school year). The database includes approximately 130 variables, but in this report we focus on three key school finance measures: effort, adequacy, and progressivity. As a whole, we feel that these three measures provide a succinct and informative overview of the adequacy and fairness of states’ school finance systems.” Find the report.
— Scandinavia’s policies on education. From a New York Times article on the role of education in Scandinavia’s success: “The 19th-century Nordic elites did something we haven’t been able to do in this country recently. They realized that if their countries were to prosper they had to create truly successful ‘folk schools’ for the least educated among them. They realized that they were going to have to make lifelong learning a part of the natural fabric of society.” Just something to think about. Read more.
