AMY TAN REMINDS US of the importance of voice and story. My story: I grew up in a barrio (working-class community) in South Los Angeles, California. As the son of Mexican immigrants with limited economic means, I had to endure erasure, disrespect, racism, systemic violence, and marginalization. This was at play amidst the beautiful Southern California weather, good times at the beach, friendships, and family get-togethers.
