PEOPLE WHO “GET IT.” When a 9yo boy with autism visited the Universal Studios attraction on Orlando, Florida, and spent the entire afternoon anticipating the Spider Man ride only to find it closed when he arrived, he, not surprisingly, laid on the ground and had a melt-down. What happened next was surprising. A female park employee, after asking the boy’s mother for permission, lay down next to him, not making eye contact but speaking to him calmly and helping with “crowd control” to calm the boy. SEEKING ATTENTION, OR MORE? “… if we know anything about child development, it is that very young children actually actively need our attention,” writes a consultant in early child development. She also explains that the ways in which children seek attention can seem annoying or disruptive to adults. She goes on, “What if instead of saying (or thinking), ‘She is just doing it for attention… ignore her,’ we said (or thought) instead, ‘She is just doing it for relationship.’” Read more.

One of this publisher’s most popular recent articles is titled “Melancholy and My Infinite ADHD Sadness.” From the article: “…when you have ADHD, emotions set in more quickly, last longer, and require superhuman strength to escape. We get stuck in a blink — emotionally paralyzed as depression lies in wait.” Find it. Separately, an older article on the ADDitude site is about slow processing speed. ” The concept of slow processing speed (SPS) and its effect on learning is still new, so parents should take the lead on working with psychologists, schools, and their own child to differentiate symptoms of ADHD from SPS and to manage delayed processing.” Find the article.
