PARENTING, 1. A freelance writer who is the mother of four observes that society seems to have forced women into a “never-ending motherhood contest,” in which mothers who feel they’re not on top of everything can suffer emotionally. The writer urges other mothers not to be too hard on themselves. And there’s a wrinkle, because the writer says that before having children, “I worked in early-childhood education. I was, at different points, a preschool teacher, a special-needs caseworker and a developmental specialist. Over the course of nearly a decade, I had the pleasure of being in the homes of nearly 800 families.” She knows what parents go through. And she observes, “I know that we all have much more in common than we have different.” Find this perspective piece.
