BACK-TO-SCHOOL TIPS. Psychologist Gail Post has assembled some resources — past blot postings of hers — that might offer you help as your teen or middle-schooler heads back for a new school year. SCHOOLS, ANXIETY. “How Can Schools Help with Anxiety” is a story title at MindShift, a feature at KQED news, about anxiety (and accompanying depression). It profiles a high school near San Francisco that has established an “anxiety group” where professionals help students confront and deal with their feelings. The goal: for “students to become more aware of the signs of their anxiety, what triggers it, and how they can tell themselves a different story about what’s happening.” The group is part of an impressive array of wellness services offered at the particular high school. HISTORY COURSE: ADHD. That’s what ADDitude is offering on its website. The blurb for the article says this: ” ADHD wasn’t called ADHD until the late 1980s, but its core symptoms have been recognized as a condition since the early 1900s. The history of ADHD – and its treatment with medications – is still evolving today as we achieve greater understanding of this complex disorder.” Find the article.

PARENT FOOTPRINT. Psychologist Dan Peters offers a new podcast in this series, one on “parenting to your child’s temperament and inner drive,” with Wendy Gossett. The show is about “temperament psychology.” Find it.

SCIENCE, RESEARCH, MEDICINE
— On pollution and depression, from WTTW: “University of Chicago researchers Atif Khan and Andrey Rzhetsky spent two years analyzing data on air pollution and mental health treatment in the U.S. and Denmark. Their findings suggest a ‘significant link’ between exposure to environmental pollutants and an increase in the prevalence of mental illnesses.” Find the study write-up.
— On a treatment for Tourette’s, from Science News: “A study has now trained adolescents with Tourette Syndrome to control their tics through an imaging technique that allows patients to monitor the function of their own brain in real time.” Find the study write-up.
