THE DIALECTICAL NATURE OF SAFETY AND GROWTH — that’s a phrase from an article by Scott Barry Kaufman in Scientific American in which Kaufman essentially reinterprets Maslow’s thoughts and hierarchy for us. If you’ve ever thought that pyramid was a little odd or rigid, check out Kaufman’s article. Now, there are a lot of words and at at least a couple schools of thought intervening between the phrase we quote at the beginning of this item and the mention of “twice-exceptional” in the article. Right before the mention of our special phrase comes this line regarding security versus growth: “…in the real world, most people are not entirely free to choose their most valued direction.” We think you might find this to be a thoughtful article.
