Gifted, Not Gifted, 2e, Not 2e, More

TO BE 2e, FIRST YOU HAVE TO BE GIFTED. And to be gifted, you have to be discovered. According to an article at The Hechinger Report, there are more unidentified gifted students in the U.S. than identified — 3.6 million versus 3.3 million. One solution: universal screening, which we support as a way of finding all 2e students. (Happy Face Emoji) Find the article.

EDUCATION WEEK says that 2e students often miss out on gifted classes, to which we in the 2e community respond with “Duh.” One statement that leaped out at us from the article: “Nationwide, less than 3 percent of students enrolled in gifted and talented education have been identified with disabilities.” We’re skeptical at that low number. EDUTOPIA offers an article titled “What Students Should Know about Dysgraphia.” It’s a bigger concern than you might imagine in the 2e community. Find the article, and if you’re a parent consider sending it to an appropriate educator.

ASD IN COLLEGE. The Hechinger Report notes “as diagnoses rise, more colleges add services for students with autism.” But it goes on, “These few programs serve small numbers, however — and often at a high price.” Find the article.
