GIFTED ED 101. The Belin-Blank Center at the University of Iowa has released an infographic highlighting some of the basics of gifted education. The basic points include: What is gifted?; how talent development is different than gifted ed; acceleration and enrichment; and, in a pitch for Belin-Blank’s PD resources, “How do I learn more about how to teach gifted students?” Find the infographic, which is attractively done in what appear to be the school colors of the university.
DR DEVON ON CONVENTIONAL WISDOM: “Should you encourage straight A’s”? Granted that this question carries a heavier burden when applied to 2e kiddos as opposed to kids who are “only” gifted, Devon MacEachron gives pros and cons of such parental encouragement. She, with at least one offspring who was not a traditional learner, now believes in not emphasizing grades, writing that while she did encourage her own children, “it may have been a waste of valuable time that could have been better spent following the paths of garden snails,” a line we really like and to which we award today’s 2e Eloquence Sticker. ADVOCACY OPPORTUNITY. The National Center for Learning Disabilities asks you to “Tell Congress to fund LD research,” and provides an online tool for you to do so. All you should have to do is enter your ZIP code so the tool can ascertain your representative and then provide a closing (should you want to close with something other than “Sincerely” — eg, “Get the lead out!”) and your name. Find the tool.
