TiLT PARENTING has posted a list of schools “friendly to differently-wired children.” The source: input from the TiLT Parenting community. The list is a “living document”; TiLT encourages new contributions and feedback to help parents find that “right” school. Find the list.

DYSLEXIC “SUPERPOWER.” A young man with dyslexia has a talent to build portraits of people using… 750 Rubik’s Cubes. A recent portrait was of the wrestler John Cena; another was of Keanu Reeves. The boy’s dad says, “The general public sees dyslexia basically as flipping words around, flipping letters around, and that’s where it ends. We never talk about the advantages and the special gifts that many dyslexics have…” Find the story.

DAVIDSON INSTITUTE. This organization’s January newsletter is out, with news about the application processes for the Davidson Academy, Davidson Fellows Scholarships, and the THINK Summer Institute. Also covered: legislative news, articles and resources, pointers to news items, and an interview with a young woman who is a Davidson Fellow. — Depression treatment, from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation. “Results of a new study contribute to this move toward ‘precision medicine,’ revealing patterns of functional connectivity in the brain—observable before treatment begins—that correspond with the likelihood that a patient with major depressive disorder will respond to a specific treatment, in this case, the commonly prescribed antidepressant medicine sertraline (Zoloft).” Find the study write-up.
— Genetics and ASD, from SmartBrief. “Researchers have identified 102 genes tied to autism spectrum disorder, 49 of which also are associated with other developmental delays. The findings in the journal Cell, based on data involving more than 35,000 individuals, may prompt improved understanding of ASD causes and the development of new treatments for severely impaired children….” Find the study write-up.
— Anxiety recovery, from Science Daily. “A new University of Toronto study investigated three levels of recovery in a large, representative sample of more than 2,000 Canadians with a history of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The study reports that 72% of Canadians with a history of GAD have been free of the mental health condition for at least one year.” Find the study write-up.
